Big Week

This next week is a huge week for wrestling in Cedaredge. I finished up the "playbook" today. We have our winter sports meeting on Monday night at 6pm at the high school. Athletes, managers, and parents should all attend. I am working to finalize the technique video this week. I am moving classrooms due to the weight room being moved into my classroom, which in turn means we get the wrestling room back. That means we need to drop mats and set up the room; I would like to do a bit of painting and installing of exercise equipment. On Wednesday, we are going to watch an intra-squad "wrestle-off" scrimmage at Mesa State and picking up concession food. Registration for the youth tournament is due on Wednesday so that means we will be starting to lay out brackets. Thursday is our first high school practice. Friday, after practice, we are setting up for our youth tourney..."Bruin Bash". Saturday is the tournament with the little guys wrestling in the morning and the older kids wrestling in the afternoon. Saturday night is moving mats back, and Sunday is a day of rest...hopefully...

Montrose Lil Indian Tourney

Yesterday we had our first outing of the year. The competition was pretty tough with kids from Grand Junction, Montrose, Palisade, Meeker, and some other assorted towns. I think many of the little kids from the other towns wrestle year round, and there were even some private clubs represented. Our kids did an awesome job. I am so proud of how hard they fought. Our older kids had a little harder time than the younger ones, but the small issues we have are technique problems that are easy to fix with more practice. I was so impressed with the coachability of the kids. They really listened well and tried to do the things I asked them to. As I tell them, "the only thing you can control is your effort and your attitude." With the high emotions associated with youth tourneys, they kept a great attitude all day--win or lose. I can honestly say that each kid did their best, which is all I ask. Overall, it was a very positive experience. My wife took about 330 pictures and is arranging them into our scrapbook which is starting to take shape with summer club, world's strongest bruin, fall camp, fall season practice, and now this tourney.

Busy, Busy, Busy

It is a busy time of year. The final recruiting is getting done. Our fall youth season is wrapping up. We've got our youth tournament coming in a week and a half. The parent rules meeting is Monday at 6:00 P.M. at the high school. We are going to Mesa State on Wednesday to watch some college wrestling. It has been great, but I am looking forward to slowing down the planning and just getting to WORK! Since I haven't blogged in a while I figured I would give you a little flavor of my new favorite coach.
